A Year Along the Abandoned Road

A portrait of a deserted fisherman's village in Northern Norway called Børfjord - a place with an incredible personality in the middle of a magnificent Arctic nature. The 12 minute short film was filmed in 70mm Super Panavision, using a specially developed "nature animation" technique. The result is a magic flight in one single shot, along the remains of an internal village road. At the same time a whole year passes by at 50 000 times normal speed! Most of the year, the village of Børfjord lies empty with virgin snow between cold houses. People show up only during a short and hectic summer season. But the cycles of nature go on as they have always done, totally independent of what people might do.

Nanook of the North

This pioneering documentary film depicts the lives of the indigenous Inuit people of Canada's northern Quebec region. Although the production contains some fictional elements, it vividly shows how its resourceful subjects survive in such a harsh climate, revealing how they construct their igloo homes and find food by hunting and fishing. The film also captures the beautiful, if unforgiving, frozen landscape of the Great White North, far removed from conventional civilization.

What We See

After experiencing a traumatic event in Igloolik (an Inuit hamlet in Foxe Basin, Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut), Uyarak leaves her community and family in Nunavut to live in Montréal. When Covid-19 lockdowns close off the Canadian Arctic from the rest of the world, Uyarak is further separated from her closest friend, eldest sister, Saqpinak. This extreme situation blurs the lines of both the fictional lives of the sisters, and the non-fiction lives of the film’s directors, Lucy Tulugarjuk and Carol Kunnuk, who play the sisters.

It seemed like a great idea at the time. Rhea wanted to make a documentary about a group of young people in a suburb of Oslo who use the medium of film to explore and tell their own stories. They film the everyday life they know, with football matches and cars on fire. But when Rhea, a cultural outsider and a documentary filmmaker who works for Norwegian TV, tries to tell their story, the young people resist. Rhea must learn to let go of her control over her own film. But what happens when you have to bring everyone into the editing room in the name of co-creation? Ane Hjort Guttu is a visual artist with a number of short works at previous editions of CPH:DOX. With her first feature film, she has created a sly but never malicious satire of what happens when good intentions, artistic freedom and political activism collide in the 2020s.
