Anoop studies law in Calcutta, while his widowed mom in a small town in West Bengal. He has a sister, Sudha, who is married to Anil and lives in Calcutta. Since Anoop is of marriageable age, his mom has seen a girl for him, whose name is Vidya, and is the daughter of Shankarlal. When Anoop returns home, she asks him for his approval, but he says he wants to see the girl first. He goes to see Vidya, and also gets to meet another belle by the name of Minoo. He returns home, tells his mom that he cannot marry Vidya, but will marry only Minoo.

Five friends go on an adventurous trip just before one among them is about to get married. However, post an entire night of partying, they are shocked to find one of their friends missing.

Dr. Arun lives with his brother, Madhu; dad Judge Ramkrishan; and mom Kamla in a palatial house. He decides to help the poor and the needy and in order to do this he re-locates to a small town, where he meets with a young nurse named Sumati and both fall in love with each other. Sumati lives with her mom, Laxmi, and has no father. When Kamla starts looking for a prospective bride for Arun, he informs her that he has given his heart to Sumati. Ramkrishan sends for Laxmi, who gladly accepts the invitation. After her meeting, Arun inquires about the results with his mom and dad, and is told to forget about Sumati and marry someone else. When Arun asks for a reason behind their refusal, they refuse to divulge any information. The question remains, why did his parents turn down Sumati's mom, and what exactly happened during that meeting with her?

Rai Bahadur lives a wealthy lifestyle in Panjim, Goa, along with three brothers, Raman, Kamal, and Ashok along with their respective wives and children. He also has a sister, Shanno, and a daughter, Rinki, who is of marriageable age. Since his business is not doing too well, he asks his US-based friend, Ranjit, for assistance. It is then that Khanna finds out that Raja is a poor motor mechanic, and is the brother of union leader, Shanker. He asks Raja to leave, and warns Anju that if she ever sees him again, he will arrange to have Raja killed. Anju must now decide to carry on with her love-life, or obey her father and save her lover's life.

Bharat's mom (Kamini Kaushal) is torn between the love for her husband and her son. Bharat determination against the Diwan is so strong that he decides to bomb-blast a railway train transporting the Diwan, knowingly that his own dad is also travelling on that train. They do get married, and then one disaster after another befalls Madan's family, his dad, his sister, and his younger brother; which leaves both Geeta and Madan wondering if more disasters are to follow them, and if the Pandit's prophecy is indeed true.

Kavita lives a poor lifestyle with her widower dad, Rai Bahadur, and her brother. They had once been wealthy but now live in a heavily mortgaged mansion. She is in love with Advocate Sunil much to her family's displeasure as he is unsuccessful and an alcoholic. They discuss her situation with Murli, who arranges a matrimonial alliance with the Srivastav family. The Srivastavs consist of Mr. Srivastav, his wife, Shobha; a widower Advocate son, Jaswant and his daughter, Binny; and second son, Vimal, who is studying Medicine and is in love with wealthy Madhu. The Srivastav's mistakenly believe that Rai Bahadur is wealthy and force Vimal to marry Kavita. Shortly thereafter Madhu's marriage is arranged elsewhere...

Deepak is the only son in the Walia family. His dad has passed away, leaving him responsible for his widowed mom, and two sisters, who are now of marriageable age. Deepak is on the lookout for suitable grooms, and does find two of them, but is unable to go through with the marriages, as both of the grooms' dads demand a large dowry. A family drama with a special focus on two generations of the Chopra family. Dinanath Chopra lives in a small tenement with his wife, and two sons Baldev, and Chandramohan. Dinanath re-finances his house in order to get Baldev to study further and be a doctor, and also gets him married with Rekha who comes from a very wealthy family. Chandramohan studies in college, and has a sweetheart in the form of the gorgeous Asha. Asha lives with her mom, and dad, a sort of quack. Differences in the Baldev emerge and multiply. Baldev and Rekha move to their palatial house. The birth of a baby boy to Rekha does lighten things up a bit, but not for long. Dinanath loses his eyesight in an accident and becomes blind.

One day while distributing eggs and chickens, Sunny reaches up with Roma Singh and both can get into the pettiest quarrels and they soon begins to fight and Sunny offers Roma to rebuild his farm house as a part of her punishment. Both soon realize that they are childhood lovers and attempts to rebuild that love once again, both are successful in doing so and plans to get married but there love is opposed by Roma's dad, the wealthy and famous businessman, Sardar Dinesh Singh Girji, who will do anything in his power to prevent Roma and Sunny from meeting leave alone marriage.

At the very moment of her birth, ill-fated Chhaya's mother passes away, her dad loses his job, and their house burns down. She is shunned since then by children her age as well as their parents. Her dad brings her up with a lot of love, and even arranges her marriage with a young man, whose mother, uncle and nephew approve of Chhaya. But when the uncle finds out about Chhaya's past, they reject her. This news kills her dad, and Chhaya re-locates to live with her friend, Leela Lal, who lives a middle-class lifestyle with her husband, Murari, and her mother-in-law, who is very superstitious and never lets Leela out of her sight. Murari and Leela introduce her to Prakash, an airline pilot, and both eventually fall in love with each other. When Prakash takes her with him to meet his mom, Chhaya finds out that she is the same woman who rejected her and abruptly leaves without meeting anyone.

Suman and Vijay Rai are childhood friends who are heart-broken when Suman's dad decides to move away. Both have a heart tattooed on their arm to remember each other for the rest of their lives. Years later, they unknowingly meet each other, however Suman is married to Vijay's brother, Prakash, while Vijay is married to a wealthy woman, Rita.

Gayetri, who lives a middle-class lifestyle with her dad, Badri, and mom, Satyavati, in Madhavpur, is soon married to Vijay, but realizes that he is an atheist, while she is a devout Hindu, and worshiper of Lord Shiv, and it was perhaps for this reason that their marriage ceremony was marred by several accidents, including Vijay being mauled by a runaway buffalo, and a fire breaking out at the Mandap itself. Calcutta-based Naval Officer Shankar Choudhry lives a wealthy lifestyle with his doctor dad, and mom. One day while returning home in a cab home from a Club, he comes an injured man, Shekhar, takes him home, has his dad nurse look after him, as well as goes to his home to notify his sister, Neela. Both Neela and he fall in love with each other. When Shekhar recovers, he returns home, and it is then that Shankar notices a change in Neela. When he questions her, she refuses to answer. Then Shekhar is shot and killed in his apartment. A Police Dectective Officer assigned to this homicide - has a lighter with the word 'S' engraved on it. This leads him to suspect three persons: One is a gangster named Shyam Sunder, second a delinquent runaway child, Sushil Kumar alias Daaku, who lives with his maternal uncle and aunt; and the third is none other than Shankar Choudhry himself.

Ajit, the Personal assistant to Princess Usha, does away with her and brings along a look-alike, Kiran, to pose as her for a few days. Kiran, although poor, refuses to do so, and Ajit threatens her and her family, and she reluctantly agrees. She meets with Usha's fiance, a Prince himself, and falls in love with him, not realizing that her feelings will soon be history when those few days come to an end, and she must then give up her wealthy lifestyle and go back to being poor again.

Arjun Rai lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, and works as an auto mechanic for a living. He and wealthy Sapna are in love with each other, much to the chagrin of Sapna's dad, who wants her to get married to someone wealthy. Arjun decides to buy his own garage and borrows money from a client, Jagdish Chopra. He works hard and is able to save some money. When he goes to propose for Sapna's hand, her dad asks his watchmen to throw him out, while doing so they find out he was armed, as a result police are summoned and he is arrested. Sapna re-locates to the U.S. to stay with her aunt, who subsequently convinces her to get married to Gautam Saigal.
