Starting in 1944 in the wake of the Liberation and continuing into the '60s, 'houses of hope' were established to lend a semblance of continuity to youngsters orpahaned by the war. Nina's Home takes place between September 1944 and January 1946 in an orphanage housed in a chateau outside Paris. At the outset, the country residence is run by Nina who has a core population of French Jewish children whose parents are probably dead. Food is scarce. News of the Concentration Camps hasn't hit yet, but some months later, a contingent of youths arrive form the liberated camps. The children are a disparate, wild, damaged group and conflicts ensue. Nina's challenge is to help them make their first delicate moves toward the future and in the process restore all of them, including herself, to life.

July 2017, liberated Mosul lies in ruins. Ghadeer, a young journalist who took refuge in Brussels after the Islamic State took the city, decides to abandon the promise of a future in Europe to return to his people. With a few friends, he founded Radio One FM, a station independent of any religious, community or political affiliation, which could help restore peace. The first two years were those of utopia for this volunteer team: thanks to journalistic work documenting the country's difficulties, Radio One gained a national audience. But economic difficulties and the growing pressure of militias linked to the political clans fighting for control of Iraq finally got the better of the enterprise.

The feature adaptation of the novel which tackles the global refugee crisis and takes place in an unidentified country in the Middle East, where young Saeed and burqa-wearing Nadia flee their home after Saeed’s mother is killed by a stray bullet stemming from violent clashes between guerrillas and the local government. The allegorical tale shows the contrast between the migrants’ tenuous daily reality and that of the privileged native population who’d prefer that they disappear.

Jacinto, a robust adult with the mind of a child, lives with his ageing parents, the last inhabitants remaining in an isolated rural village in the Galician mountains.
