Suraj (Govinda) lives with is parents viz, dad (Aloknath), mom Savitri (Seema Deo), sister Pooja (Parijat), elder brother Amar, his sister-in-law, and a niece and nephew. Amar is employed in the persian gulf and sends some money so that the family can find a suitable groom for Pooja. When Suraj goes to deposit the money in the bank, some bankrobbers intercept him and take his money. Since the money was not deposited in the bank, the bank is unable to guarantee the amount. Suraj does not share this info with his family, so that they needn't worry. Suraj goes in search of the culprits and meets up with a petty thief and pick-pocket Bindiya (Farha). He feels sorry for her, and takes her home and introduces her to his family, and promises to marry her.

Science College Principal Tripathi is criticized by the college professors, as his younger brother Ajay failed the exam twice and fell behind by two years. Tripathi is angry with Ajay and wants him to give up poetry and concentrate on his studies. Ajay does not do this and instead leaves the house, telling his brother that he will establish himself as a poet and then return home. He submits his poems for publication but is told that they are lacking. He falls in love with the beautiful Nikita (Mamta Kulkarni), the daughter of a wealthy industrialist. Ajay wants to establish himself before getting married, and relocates to Bombay. Upon reaching there, he becomes engaged to Bollywood actress Jyoti (suchitra Krishnamurthy), and starts gambling and drinking. Nikita moves to Bombay and finds Ajay, a ruined young man. Together they must try to set his life right, so that he can fulfill the promise he made to his brother.

Kamla lives a poor lifestyle in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India, along with her widowed dad, Dinanath, who works as an Accountant with Sarpanch Journal, and two younger brothers, college-going Kumar, and school-going 12 year old brother, Kishore. Dinanath's main aim is to get Kamla married to her lover, wealthy Prem, and ensure that Kumar and Kishore get a proper college education. When Dinanath's eyesight becomes very weak, he starts making errors, and loses his job. He does manage to persuade his employer, Laxmidas, to hire Kumar once he gets his degree in Arts. On the day of the results, Kumar has an accident and passes away, a devastated Dinanath bangs his head, injures himself, is hospitalized, recovers but loses his vision completely. As a result, Kamla's wedding is canceled, Prem reluctantly gets married to Shyama; while Kamla gets a job and starts to look after her dad and Kishore.

Kuku Rai belongs to a wealthy family, and lives with her businessman dad and housewife mom. Since she is of marriageable age, her parents want her to get married to a young man named Ajit, who also comes from a wealthy family. Nilambhar Chakravorty belongs to a poor family, and lives in a joint family with his married brother, Pitambar, unmarried sister, Punnu, and wife, Biraj. Since his sister is of marriageable age, he arranges her marriage, and borrows some money. When Pitambar comes to know about this, he refuses to share any expense in his sister's marriage, and decides to separate, resulting in a fence being put up between their homes. Nilambher, unable to find employment, is unable to pay back the loan, and soon both he and his wife barely have enough to live on. To complicate matters further, Deodhar, a wealthy young contractor has his eye on Biraj's beauty and would like to be intimate with her, in return for money and a better life.

Shera lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay along with his widower dad, a retired school-teacher, and is love with his neighbor, Sapna, who he hopes to marry some day. Shera wants to get rich quickly, but unable to get a job, decides to take to crime and works with a gangster, Jaggu. One day while doing so, he makes an employee named Manohar drink a potion, which results in his death. Rajan comes to their rescue, gets rid of the body, and starts blackmailing Mathur, which can only end when Shobha marries Rajan. Then one day Shobha meets a poet by the name of Sudarshan and both of them fall in love. When he asks for her hand in marriage, Shobha refuses. The next day Shobha finds a note addressed to her from Sudarshan in which he has stated that he is going to kill himself. Thereafter, every night she starts to hear Sudarshan's voice, blaming her for his death, as his soul is unable to find solace. With Sudarshan out of the way, Rajan readies himself for marrying Shobha - and it looks like he may have his way with the Mathurs after all - without having to encounter any more obstacles.

Navendhu Kumar lives a poor lifestyle with his handicapped father, Mohan, housewife mom, two unmarried sisters, Leela and Rajni, a younger brother, Kundan, and a sweetheart in Meena. He works for Avinash Gupta, however, when differences occur, he is framed by Gupta for breaking and entering, arrested by the police, tried in Court, and exiled from the town for a period of 12 months. After he leaves, the family is almost destitute and are exploited by Gupta. Then some months later, a young man, Anand, comes to visit them, informing them that Navendhu has sent him.
