Chie Jen-Hao's Gangster Rock is a lovable mess, though more mess than lovable. It's essentially about people realising fame and fortune isn't everything as long as they're alive and have options, and while there are plenty of ways to film this sort of thing - from the stunning low-key fantasy drama of Studio 4C's Princess Arete to the laid-back coming-of-age vignettes that pepper Hong Kong and Taiwanese cinema - you generally need a compelling cast of characters and at least a modicum of professionalism to pull it off. This wartime romantic melodrama set in the mountains of Yilan during the final days of WWII. He invites her to join his commercial shooting and they fall in love with each other. The commercial's successful in Hong Kong and Chelsia becomes a star now. Chung's uncle urges Chung to invite Chelsia to come to Hong Kong and he does so. Woo suddenly comes up and requires to cooperate with Chung again but gets refused. Woo's mad then turns to cooperate with another directo Choi. However, she's not happy with Choi and still wants to go back to Chung.

A man is found dead on the road. The police are on site to collect and examine the evidence. According to the police officer, it appears to be a straightforward hit-and-run accident until a pathologist operates on the deceased and suspects otherwise. The only witness to the accident is a 9 year-old boy who was found hiding behind the branches of a tree and he happens to be the deceased stepson. Hence, the investigation begins.

A shameful period in Taiwanese history provides the backdrop for this emotional drama from writer and director Yonfan (aka Yang Fan). In 1949, in the wake of the 228 Incident (in which anti-government protesters launched a rebellion that was violently put down by authorities), Taiwan came under martial law, and through much of the 1950s brutal reprisals against suspected communists were commonplace. During the years of the "White Terror," thousand of supposed dissidents were killed, imprisoned or simply disappeared at the hands of the military police.

The dispute over compensation becomes heated, fueled by suicide suspicions. Rejected for work from the local brick factory, the elderly couple relies on their son, Saharsh, who secures a job with the daunting task of producing 1,000 bricks daily for the ends to meet. Amidst struggles, occasional moments of beauty offer solace, including a village play depicting Lord Vishnu's arrival, a signal of hope. After an incident at the Brick Factory threatens the family’s survival, Bhagole, driven by desperation, decides to sacrifice himself to secure his family's future. Prabhata, unwavering, joins him, and the forest, which holds 40 years of shared memories, transforms into a surreal stage for their poignant final night together.
