Author Bret Harte relates the story of the discovery of gold in California at Sutter's Mill, and how that discovery changed the history of the west forever.

During the California gold rush, four unsuccessful miners assume that a woman prospector will give in without a fight, so they jump the claim of Kate Kenner and take her gold away from her. Afterward, although she is Sheriff Dan Deering's sweetheart, Kate decides to take the law into her own hands.

Gold miner Jim Golden is in love with Miss Dot, the local postmistress, but he has a reputation for being somewhat lazy and shiftless. One day he finds a baby that had been abandoned by local Indians, adopts it, and begins to work his claim again. Parky, a local thief and swindler, finds out that Jim has finally struck gold, and schemes to trick Jim out of his claim and kidnap Miss Dot while he's at it.

Young Sandra De Hault arrives by ship in Sacramento, California, during the 1849 Gold Rush. While on board she adopted three children whose mother had died during the voyage. While in Sacramento she is saved from the attentions of a violent drunk by Stanton Holliday, an agent for eastern banker John Grey. They fall for each other, but Sandra believes that the daughter of Halliday's boss is in love with him, and not wanting to hurt his career she leaves town.

Tasha Brooks is a journalism student at a new college trying to land a spot on the student paper, but the editor, Clancy, tells her she needs a big story to break through. When Tasha hears about a student who died while pledging the Tau Theta Nu sorority, she decides to write an exposé on the hazing. Tasha goes undercover and pledges Tau Theta Nu, where sorority president Gabriela explains that in order to make the cut, pledges must complete a series of dares received via an app. It sounds easy, but things turn deadly when an anonymous user begins sending Tasha increasingly dangerous dares, as if they are trying to hurt her. As Tasha fights for her life, and digs into Tau Theta Nu's past, she realizes that there is a larger conspiracy afoot, and that everyone at this college hides dark secrets.

Carter Raymond is a New York playboy who squanders his inherited fortune. All he has left is an abandoned mine in California, so Carter goes West to work it. "Big Jim" Helton and his daughter Mary have been squatters on the mine for years, and "Placer" Murray, from an adjoining camp, has been trying to run them off. When Carter arrives, Mary shoots him, thinking he works for Murray. Mary soon realizes her mistake, and she and her father agree to nurse Carter back to health.
