The Thomsons, like many families, have hit hard times as Thomas can't find steady work. Fifteen year old Booky takes the family situation in stride, being matter-of-fact about being poor. Beyond her loving family, there are some things about her life she likes, such as being the president of her local Deanna Durbin fan club, and going out with a boy named Lorne.

The film tells about a young man named Sergei, who lives an ordinary measured life. Suddenly, strange visions begin to visit him, the meaning of which he cannot understand. To his surprise, some of these visions soon begin to come true. Neither the young man, nor his relatives and friends are ready to accept what is beginning to happen around him. Soon Sergei will have to find out the essence of these phenomena, reconsider his views on the world around him and realize what is the true meaning of our unpredictable, mysterious, and sometimes frightening life ...

He's alternatively sensitive and brutal with Kristen, who wants a sexual relationship that he explosively rejects. Late one night, as he's closing the cafe where he works, a young Black man attempts to rob him at gun point but faints from illness. Seth takes the man, Knowledge, an escapee from a nearby prison, to a family cabin where he nurses him and they begin a tentative friendship. When the sheriff learns of Seth's harboring a fugitive, a confrontation looms. Relationships between fathers and their children dominate the subplots.
