The film follows the relationship of Miles and Sarah, two best friends from childhood with a six year age difference who grew up across the street from each other. When Sarah gets into Columbia University out of high school, she comes to visit Miles in New York City for the weekend before she moves into her dorms.

Upon his discharge following the Korean War, soldier Jerry moves back to the small town in South Carolina where he grew up. Jerry is reunited with his old flame Leslie, gets a job as an insurance salesman and begins to heal from the emotional damage caused by the war.
